Mercer County Release Date Labels
Four dates appear in West Virginia custody and parole records, and they do not mean the same thing. A parole eligibility date is the first point when the Board may consider release. It creates no right to a hearing outcome or release. A minimum discharge date, also called an MDD or final release date in WVDCR materials, is the scheduled end based on the present sentence calculation and assumptions about future conduct.
A parole grant or effective date comes from the Board. It may still be contingent, deferred, or rescinded before the person leaves. The actual release date and time is the completed movement recorded by the custodian. Even then, the destination matters because a transfer to another jail, prison, treatment setting, federal authority, or immigration authority is not release to the community.

Find a Mercer County Release Date
The correct lookup depends on the person's location and sentence. Southern Regional Jail is a WVDCR regional jail serving Mercer County, though it is physically in Raleigh County. A Mercer arrestee may also spend a short time at the Sheriff's Princeton holding facility. A person sentenced to state prison belongs in the separate WVDCR prison search. Start with the likely custodian rather than assuming one Mercer County roster covers all three paths.
- Identify pretrial or sentenced status. Read the Mercer court docket and certified sentencing or commitment order. A pretrial person has no sentence-based projected date.
- Choose the correct WVDCR branch. Use the official offender-search landing for separate jail and prison searches. Daily Incarcerations reports admissions and current population, not releases.
- Match the identity. Search the prison branch by OID when known or by first and last name. Compare birth date, location, intake, and court-order information before accepting a match.
- Copy the exact date label. Record whether the portal says projected, minimum discharge, eligibility, or another term. Do not rewrite it as an actual release date.
- Verify the calculation. Ask WVDCR for the latest timesheet, relevant jail credit, final orders, and current MDD when a date is disputed.
- Confirm the exit afterward. Use the custodian's release or movement record, the court file, and parole records if needed. A no-result search alone is not proof.
The prison portal was access-blocked during the research, and no official former-prisoner result was safely verified. That means the public search cannot be promised as a complete historic archive. Mercer Pretrial Release Has No Date
A pretrial detainee is held under a pending case, not a final sentence computation. Release may follow bond, recognizance, dismissal, or another court order. It may also be blocked by a separate warrant or detainer. No mathematical MDD can predict when the judge will act or when staff will finish processing.
Use the official court access route to inspect bond and release orders, then confirm physical movement with the Sheriff or WVDCR. A judge can sign an order before identification, property, transportation, and other holds are resolved. The order time and gate time should be recorded as separate facts. At the Mercer temporary holding facility, ask whether the last event was release to the community, return from court, or transfer to Southern Regional Jail.
Home incarceration also needs careful wording. The Mercer Sheriff describes it as electronic supervision used before trial or after conviction. It can be less restrictive than jail, but it is not unrestricted release or final discharge. The docket and supervising agency show which status applies.
Mercer Release Dates and Good Time
West Virginia Code §15A-4-17 gives an eligible adult inmate one day of good time for each day physically incarcerated, including qualifying presentence jail days credited under state law. The credit is deducted from the maximum term of an indeterminate sentence or the fixed term of a determinate sentence. Life sentences do not earn this credit, and no good time accrues while a person is on parole or bond.
That day-for-day rule does not make “divide the sentence by two” a safe personal formula. The calculation begins with certified commitment and sentencing orders. It must address concurrent or consecutive terms, the maximum or fixed term, presentence jail credit, statutory eligibility, disciplinary loss or restoration, authorized program credit, later amended orders, and mandatory post-release supervision. Note: The Parole Board cannot correct a sentencing order; counsel and the circuit clerk must pursue an amended court order.
No Mercer 85-Percent Release Rule
No general West Virginia rule was verified that requires every ordinary state prisoner to serve about 85 percent of a sentence. That figure belongs to other legal systems and must not be imported into a Mercer County release date calculation. Some offenses have special minimums. Some inmates cannot earn ordinary credits, and parole eligibility may be restricted, but those rules do not create one percentage for all cases.
The sound calculation uses the offense, offense date, sentence form, certified orders, jail credit, and current WVDCR policies. If someone quotes an 85-percent date, ask for the exact West Virginia statute and offense-specific rule. Then compare it with the current timesheet. A simple percentage can conceal consecutive sentences, credit loss, or supervision time that changes the result.
Mercer Mandatory Supervision Changes Dates
West Virginia's good-time law can redirect part of accumulated credit into supervision. For qualifying felonies involving violence against a person, a minor victim, or firearm use or display, §15A-4-17(k) deducts one year from accumulated good time to provide one year of mandatory post-release supervision for covered offense dates. For other felonies, a court may order up to 180 days of the sentence served on mandatory supervision.
A separate provision, §15A-4-17a, permits a plan that places an eligible felony inmate on 180 days of mandatory supervision before the MDD if discretionary parole was not granted. The person is treated as on parole, and the period ends at the MDD. A violation may cause a return to custody.
This local angle changes how “release date” should be read. The physical move from a facility can begin a supervised portion of the sentence rather than final discharge. The record should state both the custody exit and the supervision end date instead of collapsing them into one event.
Why Mercer Release Dates Change
A projected date reflects the known record at one point in time. Changes to credits, orders, custody, or parole can move the date or change what happens on it. The source of the change should appear next to the revised date.

A Board grant is still not the gate time. A regional-jail grantee may first transfer for DCR intake and fingerprinting. The grant can also remain contingent or be rescinded before physical release. Verify the effective supervision start and the completed movement separately.
Sentence corrections must follow the source of the error. The Parole Board explains that sentence time comes from certified sentencing and commitment orders. If an order has the wrong term or credit, counsel and the circuit clerk must seek correction in court. If the certified order is right but the WVDCR timesheet does not implement it correctly, ask DCR or institutional records to review the computation. Preserve the old and new date labels, the order, and the revised timesheet so the reason for a change remains clear.
West Virginia policy also distinguishes administrative visibility from the legal sentence. Closing a record in an active database does not change time served or time owed, and a record may later be reactivated. Thus, disappearance from the active interface cannot resolve a date dispute. Request the historic record directly when the public screen no longer returns the person.
Confirm a Mercer County Release
After the forecasted day arrives, obtain the actual movement or release record. For Southern Regional Jail or a state prison, request WVDCR's final release or discharge record, discharge certificate where applicable, final timesheet, release type, actual date, and receiving authority. Cite the facility and OID. For the Sheriff's short-term holding facility, ask whether the last event was a community release or a transfer and request the matching movement entry.

Finally, compare the custodian event with the legal authority in the Mercer docket. A valid conclusion might say that the court ordered release on one date and WVDCR completed a community release later. If another agency took custody, call it a transfer. Exact labels keep a forecast, legal order, and physical exit from being mistaken for the same fact.

Ask for the final timesheet or MDD calculation, relevant discharge certificate, actual release date and type, and receiving authority.
